Event Details

Yuki Llewellyn was incarcerated at Manzanar as a young child. WRA photographer Clem Albers took what is now a famous photograph of Yuki on the day she and her mother left for the camp. For this program, Yuki will share her experiences of Manzanar and growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, where she and her mother resettled after the war. The program also focuses on Yuki’s story in a children’s picture book called The Little Girl in the Photo being written by Karen Su. Yuki Llewellyn worked at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for 37 years, serving as Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Registered Student Organizations. She retired in 2002 and currently lives in Columbia, Missouri. Karen Su is a faculty member of Global Asian Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and is working on a series of children’s books based on the life stories of Asian American women.
